How I Meditate – Examen � Darren Rowse: As I mentioned above – if you don’t share my faith background I still think that much of it can be helpful. Stage 4 in particular is really useful for reflection. As I mentioned in the ‘note’ above – the practice of just setting aside time to think about how you live, react to situations and to notice the patterns that you slip into can be an enlightening one.

I love this meditation because it’s not overly ’spiritual’ and is quite practical. It does force me to stop, still myself and just ‘be’ for a few minutes each day but I find it also challenges me to work on aspects of myself that are slipping and also gives me a space to process and deal with the crap that life can throw at us and move forward.

The End Game

Rather than start another blog I think I can use the Thoughts Illustrated blog to journal my recently inagurated search for spiritual discernment.

The impetus for the search comes from two primary sources.

the recognition of the need for an end game to address the issues of the last part of life, especially those that arise from Ginny's cancer and also those that effect me as I "grow" older.
the eposure to Ignation spritiuality from the initial spark of the commencement speech at Melissa's graduation from Santa Clara in June, where the operative theme was For Others.

In the succeeding months, Anne led me to connect with Fr. Charlie Gagan who introduced me to the spiritual exercise ( prayer) devised by St. Ignatius called the Examen which is treated in detail in the link below.

The Examen is a form of prayer designed to increase your spiritual discernment in a twice daily review of the ongoing process of your life .

I have tried to get going with the Examen, knowing that it requires a faith in God that I do not at present possess. But it appears to be a possible pathway for developing the spiritual element of my "end game". We shall see.

Researchers analyzed over 300 million tweets collected between September 2006 and August 2009 to determine the mood of America over a 24-hour, 7-day period, and by geolocation. The mood of each tweet was inferred via Affective Norms for English Words, a word-rating system that gives normative emotional ratings for English language words.

The GeoDome - Deja Vu all over again

I just received this invitation to an Interaction Associates webcast next week:
On the webcast the CEO of GeoDome will discuss the utility of immersive environments and powerful visualizations to shake up the thinking of C-level executives.

Here's their pitch from their website:
"The GeoDomeTM Portal is a rapidly deployable (read portable sets up in 30 minutes in any room) and highly engaging Immersive Virtual Environment designed to casually immerse up to 15 people. It leverages the latest visual computing technologies to enable participants to experientially and interactively explore a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary subjects across multiple scales of space and time. "

This reminds me of my visit in the early 1980's to the exploratorium project in the Stanford Engineering School of Design.

The exploratorium was a half-dome geodesic with a floor to accommodate about 12 participants where we lay head-to -head in a hub and spoke arrangement to view a presentation of Powers of Ten projected on the half-dome ceiling.

The objective of the exploratorium was to shift our normal way of thinking to our right brains in preparationn for a succeeding collaborative exercise. It worked very well - 30 years ago, and now, as with many early visionary concepts, has finally reached the mainstream of an Enterprise-level learning consultancy webcast.

I know this stuff works - but am amazed that it took 30 years to find adoption.

I intend to learn more about the GeoDome and its global network and perhaps providing the visual content such a space needs to function at its best. A great potential for sharing complex information rapidly - and getting it through to our right brains.

Karen Tucker CEO of the Churchill Club, gave me a ticket to the event last night featuring Tim O'Reilly interviewing John Hagel and John Seeley Brown (better known as JSB) . The affair at the Computer History Museum had a full house in attendance.

Expecting that the "Shift Happens" sermon from the two Johns would be the highlight of the evening, I was surprised to find that the star of the show was O'Reilly - livening up what otherwise was a trite rendition of old stories from the two Johns.

This morning I clicked on this INC story Tim O'Reilly: The Oracle of Silicon Valley which reinforces Tim's value as a key influencer in the Valley and beyond.

Read the INC article and I think you will agree that Tim O'Reilly rocks!

This article on the ZDNet Tech Broiler provides a very cautionary tale for FaceBookers, adding to the uproar from many tech pundits about the privacy issues for regular users of Facebook.

I have already used the personal settings "opt out" on Facebook to reduce my exposure, but after reading the linked article I am not so sure I have protected myself adequately.

My grandkids, who are avid FaceBookers probably don't care about their privacy right now, but their FB content may come back to haunt them in the future.

The point here is that we are entering a new era of media, where we finally have a digital platform that allows us to retain all the rich visual features of high-gloss print, from lavish design to glorious photography, while augmenting it with video, animations, additional content and full interactivity. We’re one of the first magazines to go beyond the concept stage with this, and the demo we showed at TED and in the above video reflects months of real tablet production as we prepare to go live this summer.

Much is still to be answered about magazines and other media on this emerging class of devices, from the business and distribution models to the consumer response. But what is already clear is that they offer the opportunity to be beautiful, highly engaging and immersive, going beyond what’s available on the web. I think tablets are going to sell like hotcakes, in part because they offer such an intimate, rich media experience. We’re betting big on them, as you can see, but this is just a taste. IPad at the Academy Awards

Steve Jobs had his hands all over last night's Academy Awards - with Pixar(Disney) winning for best animated feature with UP UP : Official Siteand Apple ads for the iPad capturing viewers in crisp 30 second spots.

I can see UP bundled as a feature film on the iPad just to show off the great video capabilities of the device.

I have just read Search Patterns, a collaboration by Peter Morville of Semantic Studios, and Jefferey Callendar of Q LTD in ebook form from O'Reilly Books. The print version will be available soon, but it's worth buying the print/ebook version to get a first look at what Morville and Callendar have wrought.

Search Patterns is a comprehensively written and beautifully illustrated compendium covering every aspect of SEARCH filled with original art and copious screen-shot examples that make this book a treasure trove of valuable insight and commentary from Morville's perspective as a well-respected Information Architect. As the author opines in the book:

"Search Patterns challenges us to invent the future of discovery while serving as a practical guide to help us make search applications better today."

Carl Jung had a real mid-life crisis - the loss of his soul. The Red Book is his personal recording in art and calligraphy done over the 10 years from 1910 to 1920 during which he sought inwardly for the soul he had lost. At last we have the formula for valuing internet startups! Here it is:

"In order to determine the valuation of companies, Bhatnagar typically applies the following formula: [(Twitter followers x Facebook fans) + (# of employees x 1000)] x (RSS subscribers + daily page views) + (monthly burn rate x Google’s stock price)2 and then doubles if it they use Ruby on Rails or if the CEO has run a business into the ground before. Bhatnagar admits the math is mostly a guess but points out that “the press eats it up.”

I am not a Twitterer and I have resisted the pressure to join the mob - since I was first introduced to Twitter over two years ago by the biggest Twit of them all - Robert Scoble Thoughts Illustrated: Lunching with Scoble and by my then working colleague Critt Jarvis.

So I was enlightened by this recent "study" Twitter Study Reveals Interesting Results - 40% is "Pointless Babble" | Pear Analytics and downloaded the Pear Analytics White Paper pdf from this link. If you are the least bit interested in Twitter - get the White Paper for yourself.

This all started up again this morning by a tweet from Critt, whom I have been mostly out of contact with, and a link to his blog Why Scoble's Twitter valuation is correct... | Critt Jarvis where I get Critt's "i told you so!" treatment.

The upshot of all this Twittering is the recognition, seldom revealed to infrequent Twitter users, that the combination of a tweet with a link to a more in-depth post of some consequence to the recipient of the tweet does have value - as I mentioned here a year ago Thoughts Illustrated: from twitter to youtube - nice segue from Garr Reynolds

All of which once againn proves that you can eat up a lot of time on Twitter even if you rarely use it. Preparing this post which resulted from Critt's tweet has taken me back to my TI archives and an elapsed time of 23 minutes stolen from my continuous partial attention stream this morning.

Did I learn anything useful in reading the Twitter Study? Did you? Was it Pointless Babble or a weird extension of a dangling conversation that started more than two years ago? What it did do is make me review my blog "memory" to recall the thread on Twitter started in March of 2007 during my lunch with Scoble.

Scoble, Critt and I have gone our separate ways since then, but this morning's tweet brought it all back - and presented me with a reason to reconsider Twitter as a social media tool of value.

Yesterday I listened to a 45 minute YiTan call-in conference conversation between Jerry Michalski and Doug Rushkoff , author of Life Inc. (Estimated word count 3150 words, elapsed time 2700 seconds)

The visual gist can be scanned in 10 seconds, and you can ( when we have it activated) link directly to the snippet of the audio podcast from YiTan and listen just to that snippet( 30 -60 seconds) So far: Total elapsed time 40 seconds.
You can continue the snippet process from #1 above to link to other audio clips related to objects on the image, or you can save the full podcast to your audio library on iTunes (30 seconds)
The visual gist can be "played back" in synchrony with the podcast, so that you will SEE the visual unfolding along with the audio stream. Or you can turn off the sound and just watch the picture play forward. (This is not a great ROA, but it might suit your viewing/listening style)

Pretty good promo for Telepresence (and some nice product placements for Apple: First clip( 44 seconds) is a SuperBowl commercial trailer for the House episode Frozen showing Dr. House and his medical staff collaborating with a patient to diagnose and treat her symptoms "a world away" at the South Pole.

This sceond clip (2:34) has key trailers from the Frozen episode showing more detail of the Telepresence interaction between House and his distant patient. Happy ending.

Painting Tom Sawyer's Fence

Professor BJ Fogg at Stanford is co-creating a new book Psychology of Facebook - Dr. BJ Fogg which will be published this Fall. 435 folks ( I am one of them) have volunteered to review the rough drafts of the book's chapters which have, (you got it!) been contributed free of charge by a cadre of eager Facebookers. The primary themes of the book are:

* Why is FACEBOOK so compelling, even ADDICTIVE?
* What motivates MILLIONS to spend time each day on Facebook?
* How do FRIENDS persuade friends to use Facebook more?

It may have been a long time since you read Mark Twain's remarkable account of his character Tom Sawyer and painting his fence. So I thought you might like to look it over one more time.

Metcalfe's Law is Wrong?

A more reasoned argument for valuing network connections as they scale, challenging both Metcalfe's Law of exponential growth of network value, and Reed's Law of the value of Group Forming networks like Ning, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

What does this say about BJ Fogg's exploration of Massive Interpersonal Persuasion on Facebook? Does Facebook's virality challenge the author's views of the returns to scale of networks. BJ seems to argue that Facebook follows Reed's law.

Lots of money was lost in the dotcom bust when entrepreneurs and venture capitalists overvalued network scale effects - the concept of "the more eyeballs, the more potential value" proved to be fool's gold.

Combining these visual CV's with social networking tools brings the person to "life". Saranyans' slideshow could be a short video with his voice overdubbed ( this can be done in Slideshare) With his voice the CV would be even more personal.

Paul Saffo is a genius at translating his meta-insights into quotable memes.

Here is his take on how Obama stacks up against McCain ABC News: Obama's 'Cybergenic' Edge

I recall a YiTan teleconference call in May of 2007 when Facebook was just emerging as the social network platform. I put the question to the over 80 conferees " is anyone using Facebook?" Only one person said "yes" - and it turned out he was an Obama staffer honing his Cybergenic edge.

As Paul says in concluding his essay:

"I'll bet we will look back from the other side of Nov. 4 and conclude that the single most important factor in this election was the winner's cybergenic edge.
We might even see a Kennedy-Nixon moment before the race is over. But even if we don't, I'll be very surprised if Obama isn't our next president. And when he wins, let us hope that Obama's cybergenic instincts enable the first cybergenic president to govern as effectively as he ran."

I have been watching the rising tide of concern for the increase in the garbage quotient in the blogosphere and the declining quality of the content of online conversations. Just the other day it was Scoble who admittd to being inundated with Twits from his followers(it's his own fault IMO) and today Seth Godin, another A-list blogger, sounds off on the same theme:

"Lately, I’m feeling noise creep.

Lately, the noise seems to be increasing and the signal is fading in comparison. Too much spam, too many posts, too little insight leaking through. I don’t use Twitter, but I know a lot of Twitter users are feeling this. So are folks who go to too many conferences. And don’t get me started on victims of Blackberry cc: disease.

I wish I could tell you the easy answer. I can’t. I just know that the faltering signal is a problem."

It sure is, Seth. We're caught in a death spiral of Twittering, Facebooking, Texting, and IM-ing, which Professor BJ Fogg, at the Stanford Center for Persuasive Technologies admiringly calls Massive Interpersonal Persuasion (MIP). As it becomes increasingly difficult to filter out the signal from the rising tide of noise, we are squandering our most precious asset ....Attention!

Over 5 million people have seen this video in some form or other - the original was created by Carl Fisch, a teacher at Centennial High School in Arapahoe, Colorado as a PowerPoint presentation . You can download the PPT deck from Carl's blog site but I wouldn't recommend it. The content is the original, but the deck is all text slides.

Here is what Carl said on his blog The Fischbowl: Did You Know? about the presentation :

"I was very nervous about showing this and how it would go over, but it seemed to have its intended effect (at least initially - we'll see if it really helps generate the on-going conversations we need to have). I would be interested in feedback from anybody who decides to download it."
